Why a Multidisciplinary Assessment approach is best practice?

Psychological Assessments conducted by our Psychologists using a best practice approach

Cairns Family Therapy provides comprehensive assessments grounded in current best‑practice standards and high‑quality, evidence‑based tools. Each assessment is tailored to the individual, drawing on multiple data sources such as gold standard testing, clinical interviews, behavioural observations, and collaboration with families, schools, and other professionals to build a clear and nuanced picture of strengths and difficulties.

Our psychologists follow ethical guidelines* and use only well‑validated, up‑to‑date instruments, ensuring results are both reliable and meaningful for real‑world planning. Reports translate technical findings into practical recommendations, giving parents, educators, and health professionals clear guidance on intervention, classroom support, and future monitoring.

– Autism (Including NDIS criteria)

*all assessments are conducted in line with The National Guideline for the assessment and diagnosis of Autism in Australia

– ADHD (inattentive / combined / hyperactive)

*all assessments are conducted in accordance with the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What will a comprehensive Psychological Assessment reveal?

Comprehensive Psychological Assessments produce valid results that will reveal a client’s;

– Cognitive Profile (the way the brain works and thinks)

– Strengths and Weaknesses

– Complex conditions / concerns

– Specific Learning Difficulties

– Behavioural Tendencies

– Depression / Anxiety

– Effects of Trauma / other medical conditions

What is the role of GP’s Paediatricians, Psychiatrists, Allied Health, Schools?

Psychologists work with these professions to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to a client’s concerns. Sometimes, with a copy of the client’s results and the psychologist’s clinical diagnostic report, Paediatricians, Psychiatrists and GP’s may prescribe and manage medication’s for the client (if suitable).

* please note: if you are seeing a GP, paediatrician / psychiatrist first –  they will often refer you for the full assessment testing before confirming diagnosis.

Occupational Therapist’s, Speech Pathologist’s, Counsellors and Schools (year coordinator and learning support ) also form part of the multidisciplinary team’s. Information shared with these professions are at the client’s discretion.

What about the recent changes in QLD stating Specialist GP’s can prescribe medication?

As at 1 Dec 2025, the Government announced that “Specialist GP’s” are able to prescribe and manage medication for Adults with ADHD.  This is a good outcome for Adult’s who have already undergone assessment and have a diagnosis.

Adults will need to check with their preferred GP if ADHD medication management is a service they offer for Adults already diagnosed with ADHD and a Clinical Diagnosis Report – https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/103943
